Our best selling axe/hatchet design is called The Up North. Here is the story of the inspiration behind it and why I love that area of Northern Michigan so much.
Growing up, the family took a yearly trip up north - typically to the Glen Arbor area. As I grew into a teen I became tied of the same old trip and thought I knew everything - as every teen does. For a while I didn't enjoy going up north and doing the same things or visiting the same places.
All that changed come the summer of 2006 when I worked as a camp counselor at Camp Daggett (if you live in Michigan and want a great camp to send your kid to for the week I highly recommend!). I spent 9 weeks living and working on Walloon Lake, which sits just between Petoskey and Charlevoix.
This reignited my love for Northern Michigan and it hasn't waivered a single day since.
Each morning I'd wake up in the forest with a view of the lake. We spent all day outside playing sports, learning about nature, swimming and sailing. There was a weekly camping trip and one night off to head into town.
Each summer since I have gone up north at least 3 times! I have friends with houses up there, we get an Airbnb, but it's also my ideal area to camp.
Spending time in the natural beauty of Northern Michigan has really inspired The Up North Axe. There are really 4 aspects that have lended themselves to the creation of this design
1. The dense forest of Northern Michigan. Some of my favorite hiking is up north and you can get lost in the woods - both mentally and physically. You can follow a path or forge your own. From an early morning stroll down to the lake or a pitch-black night hike, these forest are so peaceful. They are a great place to clear your mind and hear nothing but silence.
2. Nothing beats an afternoon relaxing and enjoying the sandy beaches of the Great Lakes. While some of the shores are rocky, most are great for a chill afternoon. Grab a towel, a frisbee and a few drinks and you'll have a splendid afternoon enjoying the day.
Search the shoreline for beach glass, Petoskey stones or agate.
3. You know what is right at the edge of the sandy beaches right? One of the Great Lakes! I typically visit the Lake Michigan side, but have camped along both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. While chilly, they are spectacular, ocean like. The crystal clear colors are mind blowing. Go for a dip, a boat ride, grab a kayak or fish - just be sure to appreciate these gorgeous fresh bodies of water.
4. And lastly, we have the breathtaking sunsets. I've seen sunsets all over the country and the world - maybe only Greece or Iceland have beat the sunsets over Lake Michigan. The colors can be spectacular. From reds and yellows or oranges and pinks. I could sit on the shore for hours watching the colors change. You may even see the green flash!
So there you have it - the green forest, yellow-ish beaches, blue lakes and reddish-orange sunsets make up the Up North.
I recently got married up north - yes, that's how much I love it now. My wife and I tied the knot in June at a beautiful venue in Charlevoix, MI. We've camped, explored, ate and drank our way around the area. With so much already seen, there is still a ton more to explore!
This design is meant to invoke a relaxing feeling, of being in a better place, of being Up North.
