Hiking can mean a lot of different things for different people - a walk on a paved forest path to a 8 hour mountain trek. Regardless of your fancy, here is a simple hiking checklist.
Backpack (or daypack): Choose one that is comfortable and suitable for the length of your hike. Most quality outdoor stores can help size you for a pack that fits your body.
Navigation tools: Map, compass, or GPS device to help you find your way. Unless you're off the grid most spots have cell service - you can use an app like All Trails.
Hydration: Water bottle(s) or a hydration reservoir to stay well-hydrated, especially if there is signification elevation change.
Snacks: Pack lightweight and energy-rich snacks like trail mix, protein bars or fruits.
Footwear: Wear comfortable, appropriate hiking boots or shoes. A well traveled path might only require a tennis shoes while a lesser traveled trail might require something with more ankle support.
First aid kit: Include bandages, pain relievers, blister treatment
Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hatÂ
Rain gear: A waterproof jacket or poncho in case of unexpected rain
Flashlight (or headlamp): Important for safety and signaling - you never know what might happen in nature.
Multi-tool or pocket knife - we sometimes hike with The Outsider or one of our knives
Bug repellent
Camera: Capture the memories
Trash bags: Leave No Trace and pack out your trash - We've taken the pledge!
